Replacing one device in a property is rarely the job. Detection works as a connected set, and the set is what gets assessed.
A single detector protects the room it occupies and nothing else. Interconnected detection sounds every device in the property when any one of them senses a condition, and that difference is decisive at the moment it matters. A fire beginning in a basement or a garage is detected by the device nearest it, and the people who need warning are asleep two floors away behind closed doors. Without interconnection, the device doing the detecting is announcing to an empty room.
This is why we assess whole properties rather than replacing devices individually. An owner calling about one detector that has started chirping frequently has a property where every device is the same age, was installed at the same time and is approaching the same end of life. Replacing one and returning three times over the following year serves nobody.
Coverage requires devices inside each sleeping area, outside each sleeping area, and on every level including those without bedrooms. Gaps in that pattern are common in properties that have been extended or reconfigured, because the detection layout reflects a floor plan that no longer exists.
Where devices should not go matters equally and causes more practical trouble. Positions close to cooking areas, directly beside bathrooms where steam migrates, near supply registers where airflow disperses smoke away from the sensor, and in the dead air space at the apex of a peaked ceiling all produce either nuisance activations or reduced sensitivity. Nuisance activations are the more insidious of the two, because occupants respond by removing the battery or disconnecting the device, and a property whose occupants have learned to silence their detection is worse off than one with no detection at all. Correcting placement is frequently the actual remedy when somebody reports that a detector keeps going off for no reason.
Detection devices have a defined service life and it is shorter than most owners assume. The sensing element drifts over time as it accumulates dust, cooking aerosols and general contamination, and drift moves sensitivity in whichever direction the contamination happens to push it. A drifted device passes a test button press, because that button verifies the sounder and the circuit rather than the sensor. Replacement follows the manufacturer's stated service life rather than apparent function.
Sensing technology is worth a brief decision. Different sensing methods respond at different speeds to different fire types, with one responding sooner to fast flaming conditions and another to slow smouldering conditions. Devices combining both address the gap, and placement can be matched to the likely fire type in a given area. Where combination units incorporating carbon monoxide sensing are used, note that those have their own separate service life, which is frequently shorter than the smoke sensing element beside it.
